“Sawt Beirut International” news bulletin for Sunday, January 16, 2022

In today’s news bulletin:

  • What are the political and economic backgrounds for holding government’s meetings again?
  • Is there a near and complete interruption of communications and Internet?
  • Where is the state’s role in supporting schools and preventing them from closure?

Whoever reads the joint press statement issued by Hezbollah and the Amal movement regarding returning to the cabinet table, thinks at first glance that the two parties have suddenly turned into a charitable organization or a humanitarian missionary organization!

The statement linked the return to the meetings with concern for Lebanon, its people and its social security. It is a ridiculous justification at the same time. Where was the concern for the social security of the Lebanese over the past weeks? Can anyone believe that the party and the movement suddenly experienced an awakening of conscience that made them reconsider their political calculations? Of course not. The matter is much more than that, and it is linked to two things: internal and external. Inside, the party and the movement are comfortable with the judicial track…because it has stopped! The judicial investigator, Judge Tariq Al-Bitar, was handcuffed with countless response cases. And to complete the bilateral “victory”, the General Authority of the Courts of Cassation lost its quorum as a result of the retirement of one of its members, so it was no longer able to consider the cases filed against Judge Al-Bitar. This is how Al-Bitar became a suspended forensic investigator!

Regionally, it’s more complicated. Iran, which controls Hezbollah’s decision-making, is surrounded militarily, economically and even on the security front. The military situation of its military arms in Yemen is in decline, or even in retreat. And it is floundering internally with strong economic problems, which have moved and stirred more than one region in Iran as a result of hunger, thirst, unemployment and high prices. The security situation there is also shaken as a result of explosions whose sources and targets are unknown. For all these reasons, Iran is currently showing diplomatic flexibility, whether at the Vienna talks, or with its relations with the Gulf states, especially Saudi Arabia!

In short: If Iran were not surrounded, the Shiite duo would not have returned to the cabinet table! Therefore, let Hezbollah stop preaching moral sermons on us and portraying itself as if it is sacrificing for our sake! He does not care about us or our problems, but rather implements the requests and orders of al-Faqih!
