A brief of today’s news bulletin:
The planned seventh meeting was canceled since the Prime Minister-designate did not show up at the Baabda Palace. It’s a new fact that confirms that Michel Aoun and Najib Mikati are back to square one, as there has been no agreement on anything. President Mikati likewise writes and broadcasts lovely words, utopian promises, and golden fantasies whenever he leaves a meeting with the President of the Republic. In brief, Mikati is unable to form a government due to Former Prime Ministers and Prime Minister Saad Hariri’s high ceiling set. Aoun, on the other hand, is unwilling to compromise or change his mind, therefore he is unwilling to offer PM Mikati what he did not provide to Hariri.
If the crisis remains unchanged, and every time one knot is untangled, another appears. It is more plausible that the two pillars of Mar Mikhael’s understanding do not want a government, because Hezbollah strengthens anytime Lebanon’s state weakens. The Wilayat Al-faqih does not want a well-functioning government in Lebanon at this time because he’s willing to make use of the formation as a bargaining chip in nuclear negotiations.
Michel Aoun, on the other hand, refuses to share power or decision-making with anybody, preferring to reign alone and without a government. He has no allies other than the Supreme Defense Council, which he uses as a last option.
To sum up, Hassan Diab resigned on August 10, a year ago, and we have been without a true and efficient government ever then. And who said August 10, 2022 wouldn’t be the same?
