Qatar will not join OPEC, will invest more on LNG, minister says

Qatar will not rejoin the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and stressed that Doha will mainly invest in Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), Qatari Energy Minister Saad Bin Sherida Al-Kaabi announced today, according to local media reports.

Speaking at the Gastech in Dubai, Al-Kaabi stressed that there is a need for more investments in clean energy and there is no concern about excessive investment in this field.

The Qatari minister highlighted that his country aims to invest more in local gas infrastructure.

He also said that “there is a reality of energy transformation in the global energy arena therefore we need to focus on alternative renewable energy sources.”

The UAE’s commercial capital Dubai is hosting the Gastech Conference 2021 from 21-23 September.

“Gastech comes at an important time for the energy industry with a shared global mandate to lower carbon emissions and provide clean affordable energy for all,” UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, said.

Qatarleft OPE in January 2019, its energy minister said the country planned to focus on gas production and denied reports the move was linked to a political and economic boycott  of the country by its neighbours.
