New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern sets date for summer wedding to Clarke Gayford

New Zealand’s prime minister Jacinda Ardern revealed she is set to tie the knot with Clarke Gayford this summer.

The politician and her long-term partner, who welcomed daughter Neve in 2018, have “finally got a date” for their wedding, Ardern told a local radio show this week.

“That doesn’t mean we’ve told anyone yet,” the prime minister added to Coast Radio, “so I feel like we should probably put some invites out.”

The couple, who have been together since 2012, became engaged over Easter weekend in 2019.

Ardern, 40, told the radio show that she and TV host Gayford, 44, were unlikely to have a traditional wedding, saying she felt “a bit too old to have a bridal party”.

“I feel like because I’m getting on a bit I just need to forego it,” she added.

While a confirmed date has not yet been given for the couple’s wedding, New Zealand’s summer season runs from December to February.

There is “nothing further to add over what has been reported this morning”, a spokesman in the prime minister’s office told Reuters.

Ardern became New Zealand’s youngest prime minister when she took office in 2017 and is one of the few elected leaders to hold office while pregnant.

She returned to power last October delivering the biggest election victory for her centre-left Labour Party in half a century, largely due to her government’s decisive response to contain the Covid-19 outbreak.

Gayford told New Zealand website Stuff last year that wedding planning had fallen by the wayside as the government’s pandemic response had been the focus.
