Abdel Samad partakes in Council of Europe’s virtual meeting: Lebanon still far from implementing reforms

Caretaker Minister of Information, Dr. Manal Abdel Samad Najd, on Thursday  partook in virtual Zoom meeting with the Council of Europe, during which she spoke about the role of the media and the paramount importance of freedom of opinion and expression, as well as the projects that have been achieved by the Ministry of Information despite the tough circumstances that the country endures.

Abdel Samad stressed the importance of freedom of opinion and expression, and the need to discover the reasons behind Lebanon’s declining rank by “Reporters Without Borders” for freedom of the press, and to address the matter as soon as possible.

“The Ministry of Information has organized several town hall meetings with media professionals from various written, visual, audio, and electronic media, as well as with civil society organizations and bodies concerned with defending media freedom and combating corruption,” she added.

The Information Minister went on to affirm that the role of the public media was not only to highlight the positions of the government, but also to meet societal needs and to listen to the people’s demands, as well as those of the civil society, non-governmental organizations, and others.

“The country is still far from implementing reforms. There are many promises about the importance of reforms, but they are still within the framework of theoretical discourse, without practical implementation,” she added.

Abdel Samad then stressed the need to organize training courses and workshops on a regular and permanent basis for employees and workers within the media sector in a bid to improve their professional level and develop their skills.

“The Ministry of Information has made fundamental amendments to the media law proposal based on the suggestions of media professionals, jurists, and specialists. The proposal for amendments has been handed over to the Parliamentary Administration and Justice Committee,” Abdel Samad concluded.

In turn, the Council of Europe’s participants praised the efforts of Minister Abdel Samad and expressed their readiness to cooperate in various fields—whether over the media law or other joint projects.
