The European Union is considering imposing sanctions on Lebanese politicians if the new government fails, the European Parliament said, describing the Lebanese crisis as a “man-made disaster”.
The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, told the European Parliament earlier this week: “While the Lebanese economic model was broken, the moment of sanctions has passed, because politicians formed a government on September 10,”
Taking into account the formation of a government after more than a year of political stalemate, the European Parliament in Strasbourg will pass a resolution saying that “EU governments can no longer ease the pressure on Lebanon.”
The European Parliament will urge Lebanese leaders to “fulfill their promises” and will warn of imposing sanctions targeting those who “obstruct or undermine the democratic political process” in Lebanon.
