Guterres: Lebanese Deteriorating conditions undermine 1701 implementation

United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, expressed his concern over the continued social and economic deterioration, and the inability of Lebanese state institutions to provide basic services, which undermines the implementation of Resolution 1701.
In a report, Guterres noted that “the reduced ability of the Lebanese military forces to continue their operations in the UNIFIL area of operations is a source of concern, and in this context, it is of high importance to support the security institutions, especially the Lebanese military forces, as the only legitimate military force in Lebanon.“.
It is worth noting that the UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Major-General Stefano Del Col, along with the Head of UN Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and the UN Special Coordinator in Lebanon Joanna Wronecka, briefed the Security Council on UNIFIL’s activities to maintain stability along the Blue Line, preventing violations of Resolution 1701 and supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces in exercising their authority in southern Lebanon.
