Walid Jumblatt, the leader of the Progressive Socialist Party, voiced sympathy with the Ukrainian people in their resistance to the Russian invasion.
Jumblatt stated in a letter to Ukraine’s ambassador to Lebanon, Igor Ostash, that “On behalf of the Progressive Socialist Party, I express my sympathy with the Ukrainian people who are confronting this illegitimate war and its devastating humanitarian effects.”
In his letter, he emphasized that only a diplomatic solution based on international law and past accords, such as the Minsk Agreement, could end the violence.
Jumblatt received a reply letter from the Ukrainian ambassador, who expressed “great respect for Jumblatt’s personality and his contribution to the history of Lebanon.” The Ukrainian ambassador addressed Jumblatt, saying: “Your personal experience is invaluable to us. It was an honor and pleasure to receive a letter of support from you. I am touched, and I want to thank you for your appeal to Lebanese students to express their solidarity with Ukraine. Glory to Ukraine, glory to Lebanon.”
