Lebanon: Decline in births, increase in deaths

Over the past years, the rate of population growth has declined due to a decline in births and an increase in deaths.

During the years 2009-2021, the number of births reached 1,133,708, and the number of deaths reached 330,273, an increase of 803,435. In dividing these figures according to the following table, we make the following observations:

During the years 2009-2017, the average annual increase was 66,338 people, and it decreased during the years 2018-2021 to 51,604 people, a decrease of 22.2%.

A significant decline in the number of births in 2021, in contrast to an increase in deaths.

– If we estimate that the number of registered Lebanese is 5.580 million, the annual increase would have decreased from 1.46% to 0.6%.

Deaths increased by 21% from 2020 to 2021, and the birth rate decreased during the same period by 8%. It is worth noting that the birth rate decreased significantly starting from 2019, as the average annual increase during the years 2009-2018 amounted to 66,438 births and decreased during the years 2019-2021 to 46,353 births, a decrease by 20,085 births, or 30.2%.

The rate of increase in the year 2010 was 1.46%, and it gradually decreased in subsequent years to 1.1% in 2017, and 0.6% in 2021.
