In a statement, the Syndicate of Traders and Importers of Live, Chilled and Frozen Meat warned against “closing farms and meat warehouses and stopping importing, if the Bank of Lebanon does not take the initiative, before the month of Ramadan, to pay the overdue dues in favor of the suppliers.”
The union attributed the meat crisis and its high prices to “the decline in import operations due to the Banque du Liban’s withholding of suppliers’ dues, and because of the high fuel prices and transportation costs, in addition to the high prices of meat and livestock globally.”
It called on the concerned authorities to “immediately intervene with the Banque du Liban and urge it to pay the dues, which were partially paid in a way that harmed the interests of all importers and traders.”
