Number of Covid-19 infections surge in schools, will it close its doors?

The Minister of Education and Higher Education Abbas Al-Halabi confirmed that “the ministry’s statistics showed that 313 confirmed cases of Covid-19 were recorded in 143 schools in the past 14 days, and 107 cases in 64 schools in the last 7 days,” stressing that “these numbers were recorded out of more than one million students.”

Al-Halabi confirmed in an interview with “An-Nahar” that “we have no intention of closing schools because we have made great efforts to reopen educational institutions and return to in-person teaching,” warning against “the idea behind the exaggerated numbers of injuries, despite our awareness of the existence of covid cases.”

He called on parents to “receive the vaccine to boost immunity in our society.”

On the other hand, the Minister of Education held school administrators responsible for enforcing social distancing and obliging students to wear masks in schools for “all components of the educational and administrative body.”
