Protests in Beirut in favor of Judge Bitar: Don’t dare to dismiss Judicial Investigator

Activists from the civil movement and the “Noun” women’s group staged a sit-in in front of the Palace of Justice in Beirut, in support of Judge Tarek Bitar, the judicial investigator in the crime of the Beirut port explosion, and in opposition to political interference in the work of the judiciary.

The protesters warned against “continuing with criminal fraud in order to divert Judge Bitar’s attention away from the port blast case.” They are concerned that “Sayed Hassan Nasrallah and Wafiq Safa will continue to intimidate Judge Bitar.” “Why are Ali Hassan Khalil, Ghazi Zeaiter, Youssef Fenianos, Hassan Diab, and other security leaders reluctant to appear before the judiciary?” they asked.

Protesters urged lawyers to “stop manipulating the law to freeze the inquiry, and to cease filing litigation against Bitar, which contributes to obstruction of the probe.” They also urged Beirut Bar Association President Melhem Khalaf to step up and “stop this manner that wastes the case and the rights of the victims of the port disaster.”
