PSP: Akkar tragedy highlights the high risks of smuggling

The Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) said in a statement that the fuel tank explosion that occurred in Akkar last night is a real tragic disaster, but it confirmed that the party’s position is accurate.

PSP has warned of the dangers of smuggling and called for lifting subsidies on oil derivatives because it only led to catastrophic results, such as the Akkar incident. The destructive effects of smuggling exceeded the materialistic and living aspects, causing injuries and causalities.

The PSP renews its insistence on the decision of lifting subsidies, because it will inevitably halt smuggling, and applying instead the financing card and supporting public transport. It calls on all the forces that still insist on keeping subsidies to remedy the catastrophic consequences, and to inform Lebanese about the facts instead of the populist positions that serves only monopolists and smugglers, and leads to disastrous results at all levels.

The PSP expresses its sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wishes injuries recovery. It called for an urgent, transparent and clear investigation that defines responsibilities and exposes those involved and violators, whoever they are, and inflicting the most severe punishments.
