Special Tribunal for Lebanon annulled acquittal of Merhi and Oneissi

The Appeals Chamber of the International Special Tribunal for Lebanon, overturned in the case of the bombing that led to the death of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the acquittal of Hassan Merhi and Hussein Oneissi, and declared them guilty beyond reasonable doubt, in relation to the charges against them, and issuede arrest warrants against them.

On August 18, 2020, the court had convicted Salim Ayyash of his involvement in the terrorist attack, as a partner in a conspiracy aimed at committing a terrorist act. It also acquitted three defendants: Hassan Habib Merhi, Hussein Hassan Oneissi, and Asad Hassan Sabra. On December 11, 2020, Ayyash was sentenced to life imprisonment for each of the five charges against him in the amended consolidated indictment, provided that these sentences are implemented at the same time.
