After six months of vacancy, in a country plagued by political stagnation and a severe economic crisis, the United States has urged the Lebanese parliament to elect a president.
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement, that “the United States calls on Lebanon’s political leaders to act urgently to elect a president, to unify the country and enact the necessary reforms quickly, to save the economy from its crisis”, adding, “Lebanon’s leaders should not put their personal interests and ambitions above the interests of their country and people.”
Miller expressed the American belief that Lebanon needs a president free from corruption and capable of unifying the country, implementing essential economic reforms, including those required to secure an agreement with the International Monetary Fund. Miller confirmed that “solutions to Lebanon’s political and economic crises can only come from within Lebanon, and not from the international community.”
