In the presence of the US Ambassador in Beirut, Lebanese President Michel Aoun met today, Wednesday, with a delegation from the US Congress’s Foreign Affairs Committee, led by Senator Chris Murphy. He reviewed the situation in Lebanon with them, as well as the future steps.
“There is progression in establishing the cabinet,” Aoun said, thanking the Americans for their assistance for the Lebanese army.
In this context, Ian Collard, the British Ambassador to Beirut, stated that “the Lebanon situation is exceptional and the fruit of decades of failure and political paralysis.”
“The urgent need for reform in Lebanon is urgent, and political action is required immediately,” he added.
Moreover, Nabih Berri, the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, asked the country’s prominent lawmakers to form a government this week, “and nothing more,” on Tuesday.
Berri appealed for “putting aside all differences” to preserve the country from economic ruin in a televised speech. Lebanon is in the midst of a terrible economic crisis, and since the government’s resignation more than a year ago, it has been governed by a caretaker government.
Last year, Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati acknowledged there were considerable roadblocks in the way. Mikati has been tasked with forming the government for the third time.
