The Head of the Syndicate of Bakery Owners in Mount Lebanon Antoine Seif, said that “the information which has been circulated lately that bakeries will halt production and refrain from producing bread, in addition to the increase in the price of a bread bundle to 30,000 LBP are inaccurate.”
Seif said in a radio interview: “There was a problem with opening credits with the Central Bank and we are in the process of finding a solution.”
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Economy and Trade issued a statement earlier in which it responded to what is being circulated about a shortage of wheat in mills that will be reflected in the production of bread in bakeries, saying: “The Minister of Economy and Trade, Amin Salam, asked the Consumer Protection Directorate to tour a number of mills in Beirut and Mount Lebanon, and the ministry found that there was a stockpile of more than 50,000 tons of wheat in the warehouses.”
The Ministry stressed that “there is no crisis in the production of Lebanese bread, and that its observers will continue their inspection tours to verify that there are no attempts to monopolize wheat and other materials that constitute a strategic stockpile for Lebanon, in order to preserve food security for citizens.”
