Will Arabs remain neutral in face of Western pressures to expel Russia from international organizations?

What the final statement of the 157th session of the Arab League which was held last week at the university’s building in Cairo included, was remarkable. The statement was drafted in connection with the Russian war on Ukraine in a way that constituted a direct response to what Arab diplomatic sources call, a continuation of the enormous Western pressure on Arab countries, to take an escalatory stance against Russia in this war, which now affects Russia’s presence in international organizations.

The statement talked about the non-politicization of international organizations, as a direct response to these pressures, as the West wants to form an international consensus to expel Russia from international organizations of all kinds, or freeze its membership.

Sopurces told “Sawt Beirut International” that there is an international attack, through which they want the Arab countries to contribute to it, while the majority of Arab countries, despite their vote in the United Nations General Assembly on the resolution condemning Russia in its war on Ukraine, now see the necessity of Departure from this international attack in terms of excluding Russia from international organizations. The discussions that took place during the 157th session between the Arab foreign ministers, in which the head of the session, the Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdullah Bou Habib, participated in the international steps against Russia, led to the necessity of neutrality and commitment to it, so the statement was issued in the form in which it was issued.

But the question, according to the sources, is to what extent will the Arabs be able to withstand in the face of these pressures that are escalating daily.

Therefore, the Arabs want international organizations not to be politicized, i.e. what they want to say is that they are in favor of neutralizing these organizations from the Western-Russian conflict. With reference also to the great Western pressure on the Arab countries prior to voting on the UN resolution. The sources expected that Western pressure that aims to expel Russia from international organizations, will continue with great intensity.

The Arab foreign ministers also spoke, according to the sources, about double international standards. As for Palestine, which has suffered under the Israeli occupation for more than 75 years, it was almost silence that overshadowed the international reaction. As for Ukraine, after 7 days of the Russian war, the world went to the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. The international voice was also raisede regarding the displaced Ukrainians, because of the humanitarian crime against them, while the Syrians and the Palestinians, were displaced from their land, as well as the Iraqis at some point, and the West did not move a finger.

Therefore, for the Arabs, the political content is an issue of principle, meaning that double standards should not be dealt with, and what is wrong and contradicts international resolutions and international law, should be shed light upon, from whatever side it came.

The Arab countries voted against the Russian war on Ukraine, but they also call for dialogue on a peaceful solution to the conflict between the two sides. But it does not want to interfere in the issue of Russia’s expulsion from international organizations.
