Is the public accord exposing the masks of those MPs who claim sovereignty and change?

Nabih Berri was re-elected to a seventh term as Speaker of the Lebanese parliament. The announcement was expected, especially given that Berri did not summon the first session of the new parliament until he had secured and ensured his position! The choice of Elias Bou Saab as Vice-President, however, surprised many.

The surprise is not at the level of the agreement reached between Gebran Bassil, the leader of the Free Patriotic Movement, and Berri. It’s hardly unexpected, given that Bassil is used to doing whatever it takes to reach his goal! 59 deputies, however, indicated on paper that they would vote for Berri and Bou Saab from the parliamentary blocs. Where did the 65-vote victory come from?

Is the public accord exposing the masks of those MPs who claim sovereignty and change? Is there a whiff of betting and brokerages coming from the hallways of the new parliament?

Mr. Charles Jabbour, the leader of the “Lebanese Forces” party’s media and communication apparatus, joined us to shed light on the situation.
