Merchants can make miracles, ‘processed chicken meat’

If you think that this is a normal beef, then you are mistaken, as this is chicken meat processed in a special way to resemble red beef, and it is sold for a quarter of the value of regular beef.

Some citizens purchase this meat because they cannot afford buying the fresh red meat, and others state that they can no longer even buy cheap meat.

A poultry trader who sells red chicken meat told “Sawt Beirut International” correspondent Ghassan Farran, “This meat is processed for ‘mouneh’, hamburger and sausage.” The price of one kilogram of red chicken meat is 25,000 Lebanese Pounds, while a kilogram of chicken is 50,000 LBP. The reason behind its cheap price is because it is processed from chicken leftovers mainly chicken necks and breasts.

A citizen said to “Sawt Beirut International”: “We do not know the norms and standards of the meat we are purchasing from the market, we even don’t know what we are eating.” Another citizen said: “I buy frozen meat, since I cannot afford the fresh meat that have striking prices.” One kilogram of fresh meat has reached lately 120,000 LBP, while the frozen meat do not exceed 23,000 LBP.

Another citizen confirmed that he can no longer eat fresh meat, and that he replaced it with potatoes and cauliflower, because we cannot eat frozen meat all. ”

Citizen are unable anymore to buy counterfeited meat for 25,000 LBP per kilogram, so how they will be able to confront the hurdles that would emerge after lifting subsidies?
