“Lebanon today is on the verge of the state and society’s collapse,” said US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. It is a dangerous stance on the part of an American official who knows fully the truth of the Lebanese situation. Yet it is a stance that has gone down the drain. No Lebanese official stopped at the American statement and tried to respond and deny it. How can Lebanese officials deny the American stance, when they realize that the President of the Republic is still procrastinating in calling for parliamentary consultations, as if everything is going great, or as if Lebanon and the Lebanese still have the luxury of time! How can Lebanese officials deny the American stance when they realize that negotiating with the International Monetary Fund does not take a step forward, while the socio-economic situation is taking great steps backward every day. Also, how can Lebanese officials deny what the American official said, while they are confused and lost and do not have a clear and single decision regarding a vital issue related to Lebanon’s future, which is its marine wealth! If we wanted to enumerate all the examples of the Lebanese collapse, we would stay until tomorrow. So enough with waht we have said. With the hope of one thing, we are at the center of the collapse, and no longer on its verge, as the US official said. The situation is no longer tolerable, and the homeland is being emptied of its citizens, while refugees of all kinds are filling the void. Has Lebanon, thanks to those responsible, has become a nation for sale?
