The course of the judicial-banking confrontation continues.

The Public Prosecutor in Mount Lebanon, Judge Ghada Aoun, charged the Governor of the Banque du Liban, Riad Salameh, with the offenses of illicit enrichment and money laundering, and his brother, Raja Salameh, the Ukrainian Anna Kozakova, and a number of companies, of interfering with this crime.

Riad Salameh responded via Reuters, and considered that he had previously ordered an audit of his accounts, and it was found that there was no public money in his wealth.

To cover this issue, we were joined by the economist, Professor Jassem Ajaqa.

While the consumer price index in Lebanon for the month of February 2022 decreased by 3.13% compared to the month of January 2021, the World Food Organization estimated that the prices of basic foodstuffs in light of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis would rise between 8% and 22% above their already high levels.

Among the commodities that will be affected by the rise:

  • Fertilizer around 13%
  • Wheat between 8.7% and 21.5%
  • Corn between 8.2% and 19.5%
  • Oilseeds between 10.5% and 17.9%
  • Coarse grains between 7% and 19.9%
