To all those planning a wedding… Dresses worth over half-a-billion-pound!

The pleasure of the wedding in 2020 has faded as a result of the Covid-19 measures and the prohibition of gatherings, but this year doesn’t seem promising, with the deterioration of Lebanon’s economic situation, which has resulted in a significant drop in weddings.

“The circumstance is really challenging. We are putting all our efforts in to help young men and women. Regardless of the situation, this is a business that should keep running,” a wedding dresses seller told Sawt Beirut International’s reporter, Sarah Chehadeh.

Because Lebanon has traditionally been known for its lavish weddings, Lebanese people used to resort to bank loans in order to throw a dream celebration. Today, that is no longer the case. How will the next marriage carry the whole cost of the bridal gown, which could cost up to 400 million Lebanese pounds? “The price of the dress from the new collection runs from $ 500 to $ 3,000,” a wedding dress salesman said, “while manufacturing a similar dress in Lebanon costs roughly $ 10,000, equivalent to 120 million Lebanese pounds. Now how could the groom afford wedding costs if he was a member of the Military or a regular employee?”

In response to a question about the cost of knitting a wedding gown, she said, “Let me give you an example. One of my customers asked me to make a dress that looked like a design launched by a well-known designer. It costs $ 30,000, I told her. We’re in serious difficulty.”

Nowadays, marriage rates are dropping, given the present circumstances, which is far from psychological stability, in exchange for an increase in divorce rates and immigration to nations where citizens live in dignity and peace.
