Will the approval of the competition law open the door to more smuggling?

Lebanon is the last country to pass a competition law. For the first time in its history, the Urgent Matters Judge in Al-Matn issued a decision granting the authority to any company or individual to import products that the Lebanese market has lost without the possibility of controlling the exclusivity of their provision by the exclusive agent. According to Sawt Beirut International’s sources, this decision has several benefits, as it prevents traders from monopolizing all the goods that the citizen needs, especially those related to food and medicine, and it also prevents the exploitation of this monopoly to raise prices, and its risks lie in organizational matters, that is, in the process of controlling the crossings.

On this issue, we were joined by the President of Justicia Human Rights Foundation, Lawyer Dr. Paul Morcos.

Talking about an actual wheat crisis during the holidays, in case the Minister of Finance did not hurry in referring the letter of opening credits worth $21 million from the SDR account to support wheat and unload ships, the head of the Mills Association, Ahmed Hoteit, denied to Sawt Beirut International that bread was cut off during the holidays, and added that even if there were no Today, the central governor agrees to open the credits, and things have gone beyond the holidays. This will not affect the bread production process.
