Officials confirmed on Saturday that 12 people were killed after their van crashed and fell into a ditch on a highway in central Mexico, with another 11 people wounded.

According to the Jalisco state emergency services department, seven of the individuals who perished were still stuck inside the automobile.

The tragedy happened near Lagos de Moreno, on a roadway that connects the central states of Guanajuato and Jalisco.

A huge black vehicle crashed onto its side in a deep rut along the roadway, with what seems to be a cracked windshield, according to photos from the emergency services agency.
