Africa COVID trajectory is ‘very concerning’, WHO official says

A senior World Health Organization official warned on Friday that the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Africa is very alarming.

Mike Ryan, the WHO’s top emergency expert, noted that absolute data do not make Africa appear to be in bad position, noting that it had reported just over 5% of global cases and 2.2 percent of deaths in the previous week.

“It’s a trajectory that is very, very troubling,” he said at a news conference, given the amount of underdiagnoses.
