At U.N., Amal Clooney pushes for Ukraine war crimes justice

Amal Clooney, a human rights lawyer, urged countries at the United Nations on Wednesday to prioritize international justice for war crimes in Ukraine so that evidence does not sit in storage, as it has for victims of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria.

“Ukraine is currently a slaughterhouse. Located right in the heart of Europe, “Clooney spoke at an informal United Nations Security Council meeting on accountability in Ukraine, hosted by France and Albania.

Clooney recalled a 2017 Security Council vote to approve a measure she helped lobby for: the establishment of a United Nations team to collect, preserve, and store evidence of possible international crimes committed by the Islamic State in Iraq. It was the same year she gave birth to her son and daughter with American actor George Clooney.
