Australia hits ‘magnificent milestone’ with 80% rate of vaccinations

On Saturday, Australia reached a full immunization rate of 80 percent of persons aged 16 and older, a “magnificent milestone” on the route to becoming one of the world’s most immunized countries against COVID-19.

The country of 25 million people, formerly a champion of a COVID-zero policy to manage the pandemic, has shifted to living with the virus through widespread vaccines, as the Delta version has proven too contagious to suppress.

“Another, magnificent milestone, Australia,” Morrison said in a Facebook video message. “That’s four out of five, how impressive is that? This has truly been a national effort in Australia.”

While vaccinations are still optional at the federal level, several occupations and employees in Australia’s states and territory have made them mandatory. Unvaccinated people are prevented from participating in various activities, such as dining out or attending concerts.

For the first time during the epidemic, Australia relaxed international border controls on Monday, but only for vaccinated people from highly immunized states.

According to media reports, over 3,000 individuals congregated in Melbourne, the capital of the southeastern state of Victoria, which spent nearly nine months in six lockdowns due to the pandemic.

On Monday, Australia eased international border curbs for the first time during the pandemic, but only for vaccinated people from highly inoculated states.

Media said about 3,000 people gathered for a peaceful protest against vaccine mandate protests in Melbourne, the capital of the southeastern state of Victoria, which spent nearly nine months in six lockdowns through the pandemic.
