Building fire kills 27 in New Delhi, police arrest company owners

On Saturday, police in New Delhi detained two persons accused of violating fire safety standards after a blaze at a building holding a manufacturing plant for surveillance cameras killed at least 27 people.

Overnight, rescue crews tried to evacuate the burned-out four-story structure near a train station in the western suburbs.

When the fire broke out on Friday evening, there were more than 75 individuals inside. According to eyewitnesses, several individuals leaped from windows to save themselves, while firefighters used ropes to break the glass and rescue others.

According to authorities, the fire started in an office on the first level and quickly spread. Two of the company’s owners were arrested as part of an investigation into possible safety breaches.

Offering condolences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised 200,000 rupees ($2,580) in compensation for the victims’ next-of-kin.
