Canadian man accused of murdering Muslim family members to face terror charges

Prosecutors said on Monday that a Canadian man who is accused of deliberately running over 5 members of a Muslim family with his truck, killing 4 of them, now faces terrorism charges as well as counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder.

20-year-old Nathaniel Veltman was detained shortly after the June 6 attack in a parking lot in London, Ontario, a short distance from the city’s oldest mosque. Police said the young man was wearing what appeared to be body armor and a helmet at the time.

Due to a publication ban, details from a hearing in which Veltman appeared by Zoom on Monday from prison cannot be disclosed. The accused man has not yet retained a lawyer.

Nontheless, federal and provincial prosecutors provided their consent to commence terrorism proceedings against Veltman, alleging that the killings of Salman Afzaal, his wife, their daughter and Afzaal’s mother, and attempted killing of the couple’s son constituted terrorist activity, according to a statement from police in London, a city west of Toronto.

The London Free Press reported, quoting a family friend, that the 9-year-old boy – the sole survivor of the assault – was released from the hospital on Monday.
