China dismisses Taiwan complaints on drone harassment

China’s Foreign Ministry dismissed Taiwanese concerns about continuous harassment by Chinese drones extremely close to Taiwanese-controlled islands on Monday as “not worth fretting over,” prompting Taipei to characterize Beijing as thieves.

Since China resumed war games and military maneuvers near Taiwan earlier this month, after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the Chinese-claimed island, the Taipei administration has recorded frequent drone flights on islets it controls close to the Chinese coast.

Video from at least two of these drone missions have circulated widely on Chinese social media. In one, Taiwanese soldiers can be seen throwing rocks to ward it away.

Speaking at a daily briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said he had seen the footage.

“Chinese drones flying about Chinese territory, this is not something to make a fuss about,” he said.

Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry expressed anger at his comments.
