Clashes over Iran-Afghanistan’s ‘border misunderstanding’ ended

Border soldiers from Iran and the Taliban in Afghanistan have stopped fighting over a “border misunderstanding” near the Afghan province of Nimroz, according to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.

“The hostilities have finished, and Iran is negotiating the border dispute with the Taliban,” Tasnim stated, adding that rumors of the Taliban seizing an Iranian border camp were untrue.

According to Afghan television station Tolo News, the Taliban’s deputy spokesperson Bilal Karimi said the event occurred but declined to offer specifics.

“He indicated the fights had halted but did not offer any information regarding their reason,” the station tweeted.

Despite the Iranian government’s generally positive ties with the Taliban, there have long been problems at the border, which has active smuggling routes and hundreds of migrants passing every day.
