Yang Jing, a Chinese entrepreneur, picked the tropical southern island of Hainan for this year’s summer vacation in 2021 due of its near-perfect COVID track record.
Last year, the island in the South China Sea had just two positive symptomatic COVID-19 cases. However, the number of cases has abruptly risen this month, triggering a lockdown in the city of Sanya and trapping tens of thousands of visitors like Yang on the island.
