England reports record 117,000 daily cases

Covid cases in England have reached a new peak, with 117,093 infections confirmed on Tuesday.

There are 9,546 individuals in hospitals using Covid, the most since March but far less than the record of 34,000 in January.

Even with the latency between infection and hospitalization, the jump in infections caused by Omicron has not resulted in an equally dramatic increase in hospital admissions.

The entire United Kingdom During the Christmas season, Covid data was unavailable.

On Tuesday, the UK government’s Covid dashboard reported 129,471 new cases, although that statistic only includes data from England and Wales and represents distinct time periods.

A complete national picture is unlikely to be available until the first week of January.

In the midst of the rapidly spreading Omicron variety, the NHS has launched a new campaign to encourage more patients to receive their Covid booster shots.

The immunization program is sending over 650,000 text messages and 50,000 letters to those who have yet to receive their booster dosage, encouraging them to be vaccinated and enjoy a “jabby new year.”

Unlike in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the government in England has opted not to implement additional Covid regulations until the new year.

Gillian Keegan, the care minister, said people in England should have fun but be cautious while celebrating the new year, proposing that they perform a lateral flow test before going out and celebrate in well-ventilated settings.

The UK Health Security Agency said that owing to extraordinary demand, the supply capacity for lateral flow testing kits has increased to 900,000 per day since December 18.

The Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies, on the other hand, expressed displeasure that some of the businesses it represents had to wait several days for testing kits to arrive.

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society is also advising the public to be patient with pharmacists, citing the fact that they can only request a specific number of tests every day.

According to the UKHSA, postal scheduling throughout the Christmas period, as well as demand, may have had an influence on deliveries. It stated that kits could still be bought through the government website, but that if they were not immediately accessible, users should check again every few hours.

On the 26th of December, England had 1,374 Covid hospital admissions, the largest amount since February.

Not all of the patients in the hospital will have been hospitalized for Covid; according to the most recent data, roughly three in ten had the virus but were admitted for another reason.

According to Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers, which represents NHS trusts, some trust leaders believe self-isolating workers will be a “greater concern” than the amount of individuals being treated for Covid.

And he told the BBC that while Covid may eventually be treated like a normal cold, it should not be the case for individuals who work in the NHS since they deal with potentially “very, very vulnerable” patients.

Some academics and business leaders have urged the government to follow the lead of US health experts and shorten the duration of isolation in England.
