First president of independent Belarus passes away

Stanislav Shushkevich, the first president of independent Belarus and one of those who contributed to the dismantling of the union in 1991, passed away at the age of 87 due to complications from Covid-19, as announced by his widow today.

His widow Irina told the Russian news agency, RIA Novosti, that he “passed away on May 3 at 23:55.”

The news was also confirmed by several Belarusian media, as reported by AFP.
