Five dead in Russian strikes in east Ukraine, Kyiv says

An official in Kyiv said Tuesday that five people were killed and more than a dozen were injured in Russian strikes on a war-torn town in eastern Ukraine, nearly a month after Moscow’s invasion.

“Artillery and planes fired on Avdiivka in the Donetsk area, razing the city to the ground. In a statement, Ukraine’s ombudswoman, Lyudmyla Denisova, reported five civilians were killed and 19 were injured.

She stated that the attack took place late Monday.

The de-facto capital of pro-Moscow separatists, who seized control of two self-proclaimed republics in 2014, is Avdiivka in Ukraine’s east.

Since Moscow moved soldiers over the borders of its pro-Western neighbor on February 24, Ukraine has accused Russian troops of hitting medical facilities, residential areas, and bomb shelters indiscriminately.

Russia has accused Ukrainian soldiers of using civilians as human shields, rather than deliberately targeting civilians.

In a subsequent Telegram message, Denisova said that a Russian tank had targeted a civilian-marked automobile in the Kharkiv region, killing three adults and a toddler.
