Five wounded in Kyiv by largest drone attack yet on Ukraine, officials say

Five people were injured in what officials described as Russia’s largest drone attack of the war on Saturday in the capital of Ukraine, awakening locals at dawn with the sound of explosives and air defenses.

Early on Saturday morning, several neighborhoods of Kyiv were targeted by the attack, and as dawn broke, fresh waves were added. The six-hour air raid warning was in effect.

The Ukrainian air force later updated the number of downed aircraft to 74 after first reporting that 71 of the 75 drones had been shot down. 66 of those had been shot down over Kyiv and the surrounding area, an official from the organization stated on television.

Air force chief Mykola Oleschuk praised the effectiveness of ‘mobile fire’ units – usually fast pickup trucks with a machine gun or flak cannon mounted on their flatbed. According to him, these downed nearly 40% of the drones.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko, writing on the Telegram app, said the attack had injured five people, including an 11-year-old girl, and damaged buildings in districts all across the city.
