French afternoon election turnout down 2 % points from 2017

According to the interior ministry, turnout for the second round of France’s presidential election on Sunday was 63.23 percent as of 5 p.m. (1500 GMT), down from 65.30 percent at the same time in 2017.

The statistics reflected a pattern predicted by pollsters, who predicted that this year’s final vote between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen would witness the greatest proportion of abstention in more than 50 years.

In 2017, over 25% of voters abstained, marking the lowest turnout in a French presidential election final since 1969.
