Six people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in a plot to assassinate Madagascar’s president, according to the Indian Ocean island’s public security minister.

“One of the detainees is French, while the other two are Malagasy and French. Malagasy, Malagasy, and Malagasy are the other three “Late Thursday, Rodellys Fanomezantsoa Randrianarison stated.

Two of those arrested, according to Patrick Rajoelina, an assistant to President Andry Rajoelina, had previously served in the French military.

The six were arrested on Thursday, according to Madagascar’s attorney general, following a months-long probe.

Political violence has a long history in Madagascar. After a hard-fought election and a constitutional court challenge from his opponent, Andry Rajoelina, 44, was inaugurated in as president in 2019.

In March 2009, Rajoelina deposed Marc Ravalomanana and gained control in the very poor former French colony of 26 million people. Until 2014, he stayed in power as the head of a transitional government.

Ravalomanana ran against Rajoelina in the 2019 elections, lost, and claimed the vote was rigged.
