Georgian ex-leader detained after returning to the country – TASS

On the night of municipal elections, Georgian law enforcement authorities detained former president and opposition figure Mikheil Saakashvili within Georgia, according to Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, according to TASS news agency.

Saakashvili, who has been stationed in Ukraine, declared earlier this week that despite risking prison, he would come home for Saturday’s local elections to help “rescue the nation” and called for post-election mass protests.

The politician, who spearheaded Georgia’s Rose Revolution in 2003, believes the allegations leveled against him, alleging power abuse and a cover-up, are politically motivated.
