German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that the European Union should try to engage directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin in order to restore relations.
“We as the European Union, in my opinion, must also seek direct communication with Russia and the Russian president,” Merkel said in her likely final speech to the Bundestag lower house of parliament.
“It is insufficient for the US president to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin. That is extremely encouraging, but the EU must also establish platforms for discussion “she continued.
Merkel will not seek re-election to a fifth term in September.
