Greek FM on Middle East tour to ‘prevent further violence’

Greek Prime Minister Nikos Dendias yesterday arrived in Israel where he met his Israeli counterpart Gabi Ashkenazi and Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh.

Israeli news website Ynet reported that Dendias’ visit was “an expression of solidarity with Israel as Greece hopes to prevent further violence.”

The top Greek diplomat also took part in the urgent teleconference of EU Foreign Ministers called for by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell about developments in the Middle East region.

As part of his tour in the region, Dendias also visited Amman where he met his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi. The two agreed that there is no alternative to the two-state solution to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

His final stop in the region is the Egyptian capital, Cairo, where he is set to meet his counterpart Sameh Shoukry tomorrow.

At least 221 Palestinians have been killed, including 63 children and 36 women, and 1,530 others injured in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip since 10 May, according to the Health Ministry. Twelve Israelis have also been killed.
