Gunmen kill 4 polio workers in Afghanistan’s east

Four polio vaccination workers were killed and 3 wounded in separate attacks in Afghanistan’s eastern city of Jalalabad, a provincial health department official reported on Tuesday, the latest in a string of attacks against health workers.

Dr Jan Mohammad, the head of polio immunization drive in Nangarhar of which Jalalabad is the main city, announced that gunmen targeted polio workers in 3 locations in the city that killed 4 and injured 3 others.

“Today was the second day of our operations after three months but we have to suspend it once again,” Mohammad told Reuters, noting that all those killed were men.

In March, gunmen killed 3 female polio vaccination workers in Jalalabad, thus compelling the workers to suspend their operations and assess security.
