Indian PM Modi announces free COVID-19 vaccines for all adults

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Monday that the Indian federal government would provide coronavirus vaccines free of charge to all adults from later this month in a bid to turn the tide of a pandemic that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives in the country.

In a televised speech, Modi noted that the federal government would take over the task of inoculation from state governments, adding “it has been decided that from June 21, all adults over the age of 18 will be vaccinated for free.”

Under the earlier policy, the federal government administered free vaccines to frontline workers and the elderly, and left private hospitals and state governments to administer jabs for a fee to people in the 18-45 age group.
