According to the Palestinian health ministry, Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian fighter in a raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday. The gunman was identified as a member of the Islamic Jihad group.
Witnesses claim that undercover Israeli agents fired on Palestinian fighters after being discovered during a pre-dawn raid on the camp. A request for comment from the Israeli army on the overnight incident was not returned by Reuters.
According to the Palestinian health ministry, two additional individuals were badly injured in the raid, one of whom was shot in the head. It was unclear whether the men took part in the fighting.
In a 1967 Middle East conflict, Israel took control of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, territories where Palestinians want sovereignty. Since the failure of the last round of negotiations in 2014, international criticism of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians has grown.
