Legal standards must be respected in Belarus migrant crisis, Germany says

Legal norms for the treatment of migrants must be respected at the EU’s border with Belarus, said Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Faeser on Thursday, as she and her EU counterparts convened to address what the EU has dubbed Minsk’s “hybrid offensive.”

“(Belarusian President Alexander) Lukashenko’s behavior toward the EU is disgraceful and inhuman; he exploits people’s suffering to play for a home audience,” Faeser told reporters as she landed in Brussels.

“It is critical that legal norms be respected at the border, which is why I would welcome the deployment of Frontex there,” she continued. “It is also critical that humanitarian organizations have access at all times.”
