According to California state prosecutors, the president of a Mexico-based evangelical megachurch with around 5 million adherents worldwide pleaded guilty on Friday to felony counts of sexually assaulting three minors.
According to a statement from the California attorney general’s office, Nasson Joaquin Garcia, the leader and self-styled apostle of the Guadalajara-based church La Luz del Mundo (Light of the World), filed a guilty plea in court three days before his planned trial.
Garcia, 53, was expected to be sentenced next Wednesday. Prosecutors said he faces up to 16 years and eight months in jail.
Garcia was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport the following year alongside a co-defendant, Susana Medina Oaxaca, who pleaded guilty on Friday to a charge of assault likely to cause serious bodily damage, according to the attorney general’s office.
