More than 1,800 break out of Nigerian prison, BBC reports

According to the BBC, more than 1,800 prisoners fled from a Nigerian jail after being attacked by gunmen wielding rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns, bombs, and shotguns.

According to the BBC, the attackers used explosives to blow up the administrative block of the prison in the southeastern town of Owerri and gain access to the prison yard. Owerri is located about 400 kilometers (260 miles) southeast of Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city.

According to Agence France Presse, the party has denied any involvement.

Since January, several police stations in southeastern Nigeria have been targeted, with large quantities of ammunition stolen, according to the BBC. According to the article, no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
