A top Myanmar junta official said on Tuesday that Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention demonstrated that no one was above the law, and that the army leader shortened her sentence on “humanitarian grounds.”

Maung Maung Ohn, Myanmar’s information minister, also told a virtual briefing that the country’s legal system was unbiased and that the Nobel laureate and former leader was sentenced in accordance with the law on Monday.

Suu Kyi, 76, was sentenced to four years in jail for inciting and violating coronavirus restrictions, but military junta officials reduced her sentence to two years in her present location.
