Number of foreign tourists to Spain jumps in May as restrictions eased

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), the number of foreign visitors visiting Spain increased to 1.36 million in May, up from nearly nothing in May 2020, when the country was under extreme lockdown.

As travel restrictions were removed in April 2021, the number of tourists more than doubled, but was still 83 percent fewer than in May 2019, according to the data.

According to INE, foreign tourists spent 1.39 billion euros ($1.64 billion) in May, which is 83 percent less than the same month last year.
